How this course is built, and why

Most compliance training is a slide deck followed by a quiz on the slides. People pass and, within weeks, remember almost none of it. That outcome is predictable from what is known about memory — and so is the alternative. This course applies the techniques with the strongest evidence behind them.

Questions before answers

Each module begins with a scenario you have not been taught how to handle. Trying to answer — even wrongly — makes you learn the material that follows more thoroughly than studying it cold. This is the pretesting effect.

Retrieval, not re-reading

Pulling an idea out of memory strengthens it far more than reading it again. So each idea is followed by a question, and a missed question returns before the module ends, until it is answered correctly.

Feedback that explains

Being told “wrong” teaches little. Being told why lets you apply the idea to a case you have not seen — which is the only kind that matters at work.

Butler, Godbole & Marsh (2013), Journal of Educational Psychology.

Spacing and mixing

Later modules include questions on earlier ones, and three short refreshers follow at one week, one month and four months. Recalling something after a gap, mixed in with other topics, is harder — and that difficulty is what produces durable memory.

Explaining it yourself

Each module asks you to put one idea into your own words before showing ours. Generating an explanation ties a rule to its reason, and reasons are what you fall back on when a situation does not match any example.

Dunlosky et al. (2013), Psychological Science in the Public Interest.

One idea at a time, in plain language

Content is split into short cards, written conversationally, with nothing decorative competing for attention. Each of those choices measurably improves comprehension.

Mayer (2021), Multimedia Learning, 3rd ed.

A test of transfer

The final assessment draws 15 scenarios from a larger bank. None repeats a practice question, so passing requires applying the ideas rather than recognizing an answer. The pass mark is 80%.

What the certificate is, and is not

HIPAA requires organizations to train their workforce and to document that they did (45 CFR §164.530(b), §164.308(a)(5)). The certificate and training record are that documentation. No government body certifies individuals or training programs under HIPAA, and this course does not replace training on your own organization’s policies and procedures.
